Automated sawing centre in a minimal footprint

KASTOcenter compact combines automated storage, sawing and material flow processes in a compact, modular system. The system has been specially developed for companies that wish to achieve a high degree of automation despite limited workshop space. Material is automatically fed, separated, transported to the saw and, after cutting, either further processed or sorted. This results in short transport distances, less manual handling and a continuous material flow within a small footprint.

Thanks to its modular design, the KASTOcenter compact can be flexibly adapted to different requirements. Vertical automated storage systems such as the KASTOecostore or UNITOWER provide space-saving storage for long materials and make them available for the sawing process. The KASTOpick bar solution separates the material into individual pieces, whilst KASTOload connects the robot and the saw via a roller conveyor.

A linear axis extends the robot’s working range and enables precise movement between several process stations. This allows a single robot to perform various tasks within the system. This reduces space and investment requirements, increases the robot’s utilisation and supports cost-effective, fully automated production in a compact footprint.

Once the cutting process is complete, KASTOsort takes over the automated removal of parts and further processing. The cut pieces can be sorted by order, picked, returned to stock or transferred to subsequent process stages.

Depending on the application, various sawing machines can be integrated into the system. As well as the KASTOssb vertical band saw, the KASTOvariospeed automatic circular saw is also available, for example. The choice of saw depends, amongst other things, on the material, diameter, cycle rate and production method.

Automated parts removal and pre-processing with KASTOsort

With KASTOsort, automation does not stop at the saw cut. The robot collects the cut workpieces directly from the saw and sorts or picks them according to the order. The parts can then be placed on pallets or in crates, for example, returned to the tower, transferred to a pallet carousel, or stored in a separate tower store for finished parts.

Furthermore, additional pre-processing and quality assurance processes can be integrated directly into the material flow. These include, for example, deburring, cleaning, chip removal, laser marking and checks on length and weight. Camera-based functions for part, orientation and position recognition, as well as automated transfer to downstream machining centres, are also possible.

The workpieces remain within the automated material flow, rather than being removed, transported and re-positioned for individual work steps. This reduces non-productive time, manual intervention and sources of error, whilst easing the workload on production staff.

The integrated stock management system also provides transparency regarding stock levels and material movements. This allows the warehouse, saw, material flow, parts removal and further processing steps to be seamlessly linked together.
