KASTO Storage System Optimizes Sheet Metal Production
De Cromvoirtse is located in Oisterwijk, Netherlands, and specializes in prefabricated semi-finished products. In 2008, de Cromvoirtse introduced an Online Portal allowing the customer to transfer a drawing as DXF or STEP file online to establish various specifications and then to receive an offer for the manufacturing of the appropriate component/assembly part within two minutes. The order will also be recorded online via the portal. But then, the processing of the order is done manually. Therefore, the company made the decision in late 2008 to not only automate the order process but also the complete parts manufacturing. They searched for a suitable project partner and quickly contacted KASTO in Achern-Gamshurst. Intense planning discussions started at the end of 2008 during the “Euroblech” in Hanover.
The decision was made in favor of KASTO since the storage technology specialist worked constructively together with de Cromvoirtse from the beginning, brought up many new ideas for the project and worked hard to find problem-oriented solutions. Janwillem Verschuuren, Managing Director of de Cromvoirtse: “KASTO said what is possible but also ruled out the impossible. Other suppliers only saw problems and wanted to sell their standard design.”
Moreover, KASTO is independent of the supplier of the laser machine, on which the parts are made. This gives de Cromvoirtse the option to integrate the machine that is right for the company. The high development depth, especially in the IT-department with 15 employees, gave the Dutch confidence in KASTO. “This development depth allows also to make, together with KASTO, optimizations or adaptations as well as expansions in the future”, says Verschuuren. Moreover, both companies are very innovative with a similar way of thinking, which developed a bond between the two. Plus, KASTO was very open in the cooperation with others that were part of the project.

Exhaustive material supply from an inventory of 70,000 tons
EMJ’s hub in Schaumburg/Illinois demonstrates unmistakably the efficiency of EMJ-IT and EMJ-logistics. EMJ in Schaumburg is without any doubt the most technologically advanced steel service and logistics center on the entire American continent. The heart of the warehouse is the storage and retrieval systems from KASTO Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG from D-77855 Achern-Gamshurst. The automated storage and material flow system contains 4 fully automatic bar storage and retrieval systems and their appropriate periphery stations in 4 bays to handle materials of different types and dimensions. Today’s inventory is about 70,000 tons of material, which is completely listed in the inventories of EMJ’s EDP system. The system allows direct access to materials in other storage locations than Schaumburg to supply customers on time with their desired materials. Automated order filling stations retrieve the correct amount of material from the cassettes, weigh it, bundle or wrap it and finally put the shipping label on the ready-to-ship material bundle – all automatic in “light-out” conditions. Due to the high automation degree and the continuous automation with KASTO’s storage and material flow system, storage and handling costs per ton were reduced by approximately 16 % from US $ 96 to now US $81. This is quite a huge cost factor considering a turnover of thousands and thousands of tons of material annually. How reliable and perfect orders can be processed via bar storage system and EDP, illustrates last but not least the fact that more than 90 % of sales are filled directly from inventory in the storage center.
